The Musical Heartbeat of Leipzig and Sachsen-Anhalt

If you love music, Leipzig and Sachsen-Anhalt have plenty. The region is home to a variety of world-famous orchestras, opera houses, and music festivals. It also has an impressive network of small concert venues and a vibrant nightlife. Music lovers will find plenty to do in Leipzig and Sachsen-Anhalt.

Leipzig: A Symphony of History and Innovation

Leipzig, often hailed as a musical metropolis, resonates with the echoes of its rich musical heritage with composers like Bach, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Grieg and Clara and Robert Schuman. The city is a living museum, where the power of music can be felt on every street and in every square, church and concert hall. This tradition is not just remembered but actively celebrated.

The Icons of Leipzig’s Musical Heritage

Gewandhausorchester: One of the world's oldest civic symphony orchestras, known for its rich, warm sound. Gewandhaus translates to "garment house" or "garment hall." The original Gewandhaus, constructed in Leipzig in 1501, served as a hub for the textile trade. When a new Gewandhaus was erected in 1781, it had a significant amount of unused space. The mayor of Leipzig proposed converting it into a concert hall, a suggestion fitting given the city's rich musical heritage. The orchestra that began performing there eventually became known as the Gewandhausorchester. By the time Mozart visited in 1789 to give a concert, the Gewandhaus had established itself as the city's musical epicenter.

Thomanerchor: If you are a boy, if you like to sing and have a clear voice, you could join the Thomanerchor. Founded in 1212, the Thomanerchor Leipzig is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious boys' choirs. With around 100 talented boys aged 9 to 18, this choir has been enchanting audiences for over 800 years. They are renowned for performing Johann Sebastian Bach's works, who was the Thomas cantor when he practiced in Leipzig from 1723-1750. These young choristers balance rigorous musical training with their education at the Thomasschule, often living in a dedicated boarding house.

Oper Leipzig: One of the oldest civic opera houses in Europe, with a strong commitment to the works of Leipzig-born Richard Wagner. The opera house also hosts concerts, ballets, and operas by other composers, as well as world premieres of works by contemporary composers.
